The Future is Here: The Artificial Leaf

Image
Oft I have been perplexed by the energy crisis that is going to hit us. Oft I have dreamt of a device to produce oxygen from water. In my most stimulating episodes of daydreaming, I used to dream of a large factory which would be equipped with genetically engineered micro-organisms. These little machines would be cultivated in large scale to produce oxygen from water. But I was not satisfied. I did not day dream about chemical equations. I was not aware of technological advances which would make it possible to create oxygen from water without having to be plugged into an energy source. My aims were inclined to oxygen production and clean energy. The concept of biodiesel enthused me for a short period of time. But here again, I could not figure out its economic and practical viability. With a global crisis of agricultural land and food production demands outweighing supply I was hard pressed to think out an innovative way of biodiesel production. I thought of ‘vertical plantation’...

A Note on The Big Bang Theory (TV sitcom)

It is amazing how boring life can get in the field of science. Yet for common people, being a scientist may be the epitome of doing everything that is interesting. To deal with such a paradox is not an easy task. The Big Bang Theory or TBBT as is called to make life easier is a comic series on celluloid. It deals with the bizarre life of four friends who in their own capacities are making scientific discoveries. The details, in this age of internet are available on Wikipedia. The amazing part of it is the seamless union of science and art. I grew up believing in the happiness that movies provided us in our life. I wanted to be associated with something like that. I wanted to be part of a group which could provide humor to listless and eventless lives. I wanted to be part of a team which could transport people into an unreal world of fantasy and drama, where dreams couldn’t be disturbed and hearts couldn’t be broken. And, I never thought through science one could achieve somethi...

The Stone over MY Head

Life: One lousy LCD screen after another

I will now express the epitome of lousiness. In Manesar, the small little village I threw myself into, with the help of one of those stone pelting pulleys from the Asterix comic books. The idea was like blasting into it, making everyone run for cover then coming out of it a hero and the savior. Nothing happened. First, there was no blast, only a whimper. Second, there was actually only a whimper, so the entry basically went unnoticed. Third, nothing heroic happened. And fourth, I am still here. With a heart chivalrous, I decided to conquer. But I got stuck on a bed of Fevicol. Timing is paramount for fame. Hitler showed us that. His excellent speech and theatricals comprehensively compensated for any lack of governance or strategy. Like a windshield wiper on a cold snowy day he managed to sweep Germany clean of Jews, sending them to concentration camps, the live-human chullahs. Once the excitement of battle was over, I started to realize that I had actually lost it. Now I wou...

The Brewing of a Great Cricket World Cup

Image
How often has cricket been predictable? How often have big teams dominated and minnows just faded away? The cricket world cup always turns up a few surprises, but it is surprising to see that the surprises have gone far ahead this time around and has set the groundwork for a very interesting round two when the teams of the two groups A and B meet head to head. The group A matches consisting of Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Pakistan have been predictable so far except for the Pakistan versus Sri Lanka match, where Pakistan, the battered team was definitely expected to lose to the powerful and well-trained Sri Lankan team. Group B on the other hand has held up a few surprises and they are pretty handsome and worth writing home about. The most amazing surprise is probably the insurgence of the Irish team with their win over neighbors England. They have also pushed India to some sweat in their match yesterday. The second surprise was the high voltage encounter between Eng...
