Kobe Sizzlers – Top Down

This update is not for the faint of heart, or for vegetarians. This disclaimer has to be declared before you can go on to read.

‘Kobe Sizzlers’ is a great place to eat out when you love to eat sizzling food, served hot on a iron plate, really rustic and bold. I do not deny that it sells vegetarian fare, but that is not what I would like to stress upon, neither is it the specialty of the restaurant.

A look at the menu and hardcore non-vegetarians looking out for a workout on red meat of their well-bestowed teeth would ignore the ambience. The ambience is more than adequate with a respectable comfort level, plush, and overlooking the National Highway 8. But again, that is not the point at all about this restaurant. This restaurant specializes in sizzlers, and a look at the menu is ample evidence that it is meant for pure non-vegetarians. It has whole pages dedicated to each type of meat and I have to make a special mention of the beef section, which rare as it is in India, is quite enormous.

It did not take me much time to decide that I would be having the Steak Satellite Sizzler. My partner in crime, Anya Chakraborty took the Mixed Grill Sizzler. It took in all about fifteen minutes to serve the food, and the sound of the sizzling iron plate was appetizing enough.

The food arrived, and I don’t imagine I have waited with such anticipation for anything else in a long time. The cheese on top of my steak was melted and gooey. The aroma was breathtaking. The mushrooms on the left of the tray were glazed and the onions were just brown enough. The strips of carrots and beans lent a colorful feel and the French fries looked delicious too. How can I express my emotions, but by a shameless expression of gluttony?

The Mixed Grill Sizzler was embellished with strips of steak, beef liver and kidney, and topped with a sweetly done poached egg. The color brown never looked so good anywhere as it did on the steak. Sharp knives were provided. We cut through the beefy affair with élan.

The Northern plains of India are not known for their non-vegetarian eating habits. Most states eat vegetarian and Delhi as the national capital is very disappointing as far as choice of meat is concerned.

This eating joint located on the third floor of Ambience Mall, Gurgaon is one of a chain of sizzler joints spread out over India. The cosmopolitan nature of its menu does speak volumes of the global outreach that India has today.

Cow, the sacred animal of the Hindus, can now come out of the hiding and onto the plate of the cosmopolitan foodie. People in India have been eating beef for centuries, and only during recent times has it been coming out of the closet, catering to the demands of rising tourism. Cows have been, and are still being sacrificed in the name of religion by Hindus, and it is time to stop excusing everything for the sake of it. Small, dingy nameless eateries have been selling cow and buffalo meat for decades, even centuries. The choice to try out beef at a good restaurant in today’s world is a reflection of the changing times. Good times are coming for the eager tongue. A bite at Kobe’s would certainly do no harm to the avant-garde taste buds of the modern Indian. I would give ‘Kobe Sizzlers’ a big Thumbs Up.

  1. Delhi is disappointing in terms of meat? Fish, I can agree. But Delhi has decent meat outlets otherwise.

I think what they serve in the name of beef is buff meat. Buffalo meat has a distinct taste and smell. They are generally castrated months before they're slaughtered, so as to get rid of all traces of hormones which are known to make the meat 'smelly' and 'sour'. The only time I ate their beef steak, I was certain the procedure mentioned above had not been carried out. Great review nonetheless. Craving for some steak already.

  2. I am still new to te beef-buff controversy, but the meat I had in Kobe's was quite different, and much better than the buff I have had in different parts of Delhi. Maybe its still buff that they serve, but of a much better quality.

The reason why I made the comment about the meat is because of the meats available in delhi, the quality of pork seems best. Of The meats available in Kolkata - the mutton, the beef(really good) and the chicken are superior, and the fish is obviously awesome. Just that Kolkata still doesn't have the plethora of really good restaurants as Delhi.
